Ayurveda, which means “science of life and longevity”, is an Ancient Traditional Indian Medical Science, whose origin can be traced to the “Vedas” over 5000 years back and it has been developed by highly evolved spiritual beings Acharyas and saints. It has made wonders for centuries on the human body in increasing its longevity, promoting health, preventing ailments and rejuvenating the whole body system.
“The aim of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of the healthy person and to cure the diseases of the sick.” There are two complementary aims of this discipline. The first is to maintain the health of those who are well. This entails specific diet and nutrition, hygiene, living habits, exercise and relaxation techniques. The other aim is to cure disease of the sick. This aspect relates to various diseases, their cause, diagnosis, remedies and therapies to cure and prevent relapse of illness.
Ayurvedic Medicine is based on the concept of the three Doshas – Tridosha. Dosha commonly means ‘force’ or ‘fault, something which can easily go out of balance, leading to a disorder in the body or mind.
The concept of Dosha is not unlike the traditional Western idea of three basic body types – ectomorph (lean and delicate), mesomorph (compact and muscular) and endomorph (stocky). Most of us are a combination of two or three types. The Ayurvedic Dosha’s are known as Vata (the lightest, portrayed by the colour blue), Pitta (medium, red) and Kapha (heaviest, yellow). Somebody with dominant Vata energy tends to be thin, restless and creative; the Pitta mostly conforms to a happy medium; Kapha people tend to be heavy, slow and lethargic.
Ayurveda teaches that everything in the world is made up of a combination of the three Doshas, and that the Doshas themselves combine two of the five elements; Vata is Ether and Air; Pitta is Fire and Water; Kapha is Water and Earth.
The Diagnosis according to Ayurveda is to find out the root cause of a disease [Nidan]. It is not always necessary that the root cause is inside the body. Many times the cause may be outside the body. To give permanent relief the root cause has to be removed. When we cure some disease according to Ayurveda, we do not just treat the physical symptoms, the person is treated as a whole.
All causative factors of disease internal or external directly or indirectly create an imbalance [increase or decrease] in these Doshas first and only then do the symptoms of the disease manifest. The causative factors can be the food, life style or other activities. All these factors are affecting one, two or all the three Doshas. So if you want to stay healthy, you must know what are these factors which create an imbalance of Doshas. These factors could be your diet, life style or daily activities.
According to Ayurveda, Prakruti, which means innate character, physical constitution or disposition of a person, plays an important role in comprehending the physical and mental characteristics. With the changing social and cultural environment our behavioral aspect also gets affected but the most important fact is that our basic constitution remains constant throughout our lives, just as our blood group does not change ever. It is inculcated in the basic body constitution and character of an individual.
Our constitution or ‘Prakruti’ is a combination of the three Doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three are the dynamic forces, which are present in all living beings with the only difference being the degree of interaction of the Doshas. Each Dosha has a dominant element in them like the main element in Vata is Air, Pitta is Fire and Kapha is Water; similarly we identify ourselves as Vata, Pitta or Kapha and thereby relate ourselves as a composition of the great elements of the universe. Based on the constitution or combination of these Doshas, Prakruti of every individual can be determined.
The effect of various diseases on an individual depends on the body constitution or ‘Prakruti’ of a person. Also, the Ayurvedic treatments for varied diseases, varied formulations, daily regime, health recipes, etc are also all based on the body constitution of a person. Once the ‘Prakruti’ or basic constitution of a person is determined it is very easy to suggest him any kind of treatment. Even the diet and lifestyle of an individual should be regulated in accordance with his ‘Prakruti’ so that one can avoid all possible causative elements of any kind of ailment and live a healthy long life.

Ayurvedic treatment is aimed towards regaining our natural balanced state or ‘Prakruti’ and the Ayurvedic practitioner considers all possible Ayurvedic treatments & techniques that could provide effective treatment for the patient to regain their health & equilibrium. The treatment has three stages.
The first stage the Ayurvedic practitioner looks for causative factors and asks the patient to alter their diet & lifestyle as necessary.
Secondly seeking to strengthen the immune system of the patient with the relevant Ayurvedic remedies to balance or increase the digestive process or ‘agni’ and improve elimination. This helps to improve assimilation of nutrients in the diet and to aid in the elimination of waste products and toxins or ‘ama’ from the body.
Thirdly, treating the main symptoms or condition with suitable Ayurvedic herbal remedies to subdue the illness or disease process. The patient will also have the opportunity to voice any emotional or psychological problems that they may have as this also greatly effects the disease process.
